Like many of the refugees from the "dotcom" era, Lisa and I were exhausted and worn. I had been at collegeclub.com for three years and Lisa had been there just as long (although she had started out with collegestudent.com, which was eventually acquired by my company). Year 2000 brought with it an IPO, a withdrawal of our IPO, laying 3/4 of the employees off, a bankruptcy, an auction, a sale to our biggest competitor, and more inter-office drama than anyone should have to endure in a lifetime.
In short, we needed a change of scenery.
With the windfall from our sale to STAD, we decided to start planning for an extended break: unemployment. Backpacking through South America is how Lisa and I plan to shake off the last three years and prepare us for our new adventures ahead. Our itenerary is like our return date: open.
