Wednesday, May 02, 2001 Report from the Foreign Affairs Desk:The tinny horns of crowded buses and early 90´s japanese cars fill the streets of Mira Flores, Lima. We hit a bad case of turbulence just over the equator last night, but landed with everything intact. The seemy smell of fish hung in the air like a chandelier of bad fists as we walked across the tarmac. Those packs were heavy at 5am with no sleep and shakey bones from a wild ride, but the people of Peru were gracious. Helpful. We´re currently in the Pukara Hostal, which is an alright enough place but at $15ea. per night we knew we would only be there for tonight. Sure enough, while walking down to the beach we found a quaint hostal just a block from the ocean for $7.50ea per night. Clean and much better lit than the Pukara, it´s also much better located for the things we will be doing the next couple days. First up tomorrow, the Brazillian Consulate to get our visa. Hopefully we´ll have better luck than we did in L.A. After that, we´re putting together the itenerary for getting to Rio de Jainero...which will include stops at Cusco, Machu Pichu, Lake Titicaca, Puno, Pisco, and hopefully the Nasca Lines. If you´ve ever seen any of those Nova shows on "the unknown and unexplainable," then you may have seen the Nasca Lines. They´re the drawings etched into the desert by the long lost Nasca tribe of 200ad or so. The drawings usually are of monkeys, birds, fetishes, what have you, and can only be seen by the air. Although Lima suffers from the same pollution and haphazard development problems that most third-world nations suffer from, the Mira Flores district is very tony. Lots of brightly colored homes, luxury german cars in the guarded driveways, and well-groomed pets (always a sure sign of prosperity). The one thing I have not been able to find is a suitable net connection. I´m currently crawling through the web and have not been able to upload very many photos. I have to say, if I lived here and this was my only experience with the Web I would think it sucked. Anyway, check out the photos I have uploaded so far...more to come. Also, check out some interesting info on Peru. al smith::6:30 PM |
