Bangawoyo!

Welcome to my home on the web. Here you can find some examples of my work, the occasional update, some goodies to take with you, and some obligatory biographical data.

I work at FLO TV as a Sr. Product Mgr. in the User Experience group. FLO TV is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Qualcomm, INC. and is the only end-to-end mobile broadcast TV operator in the U.S.

I take on consulting projects when they're interesting and/or they pay very well. Some of the companies I've done work for are:

ArtisanWarner Bros.
Yahoo!Nissan
SprintAlltel
ESPNCaliente
CingularAT&T
MLBNHL
AristaNASCAR
TelfonicaIRL
NextelQuiksilver

I'm currently working on products related to mobile broadcast TV, interactive & social mobile media, and automotive rear seat entertainment that are 1-5 years into the future. Due to my non-disclosure agreement I am unable to share most of what I'm currently working on.

This is the real-time telemetry application NASCAR fans can use to experience the race when they are not in front of the TV or at the track. This has been our most successful product to date, as some of NASCAR's 75 million fans are now devoted users.

The killer part of NASCAR.COM TO GO is the Trackpass section. Trackpass gives users real-time access to data generated at the track; e.g., speed, position, RPM, position, time-off-leader, flag status, and laps led. It also provides real-time streaming in-car audio so the user can listen to a selected driver talk to the pitcrew during the race.

Additionally, NASCAR.COM TO GO is a flag-ship product in its breadth of offering. NASCAR.COM TO GO has three different real-time application offerings, SMS alerts, wallpapers, ringtones, themes, streaming audio, user messaging, and streaming video.

Caliente is Mexico's largest sports book. For this project, we designed a mobile application that gives users real-time odds for any sport offered by Caliente (which is all major North American, European, and South American sports) and allows them to place wagers on any of those sports.

The two major challenges in this project were the visual display of various data sets (a challenge in most every mobile design project) and overcoming the limited ability of a user to input information on their device. I worked with members of the Caliente team and independent odds makers from Las Vegas to immerse myself in the world of sports betting. I then designed all prototype materials, wireframes, and mockups. From those materials, I wrote the functional specification document and created the design for the application. Development has been completed and the application launched in Mexico Fall of 2004.

YouBet Anywhere was a mobile off track betting (OTB) application for the wireless Pocket PC, with access to hundreds of tracks in the U.S. and Australia. My role for this project was to develop user, technical and business requirements, and shepard the product through the end-to-end design and development phases. Due to the density of information needed for a horse wagerer to make decisions about what to wager, there were several iterations of this product's design: wireframes, data diagrams, and lots of mockups.

YouBet is another really amazing product. When approaching the start of a race, the odds often change very quickly. In my tests held at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club there was very little latency between the odds updating on toteboards at the track and the odds updating on my wireless Pocket PC.

Sprint commissioned an exclusively branded NASCAR application for sale on their deck. In addition to a new look, Sprint also required video to be included in this version of the application (previously, NASCAR video was only available on Verizon as individual clips).

NHL TO GO is a polling-based application that updates our NHL fans of all current games and keeps them in the action with IceCast. IceCast shows a real-time view of the rink with X and Y coordinates of each shot taken, along with a log of the time and player who hit the puck or scored.

I worked closely with the team at Alltel to implement their creative direction for their on-deck carrier-branded BREW wallpaper application.

Todomo is one example of the many WAP sites I have designed and published. Todomo is a Digital Orchid created brand that features support for multiple languages, accessible via the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, and Venezuela, and auto-detects the user's phone for WML or XHTML support. Other WAP sites I have worked on are: ESPN, IRL, Hawaiian Tropic, NASCAR, and many others.

Novatel Wireless contracted me to design a "Lite" version of their MobiLink Connection Manager. This application is used by consumers of wireless PCMCIA cards for data connections over cell networks and is branded with dozens of different carriers across many countries.

I graduated from Indiana University with a B.A. in Telecommunications. The first website I ever designed and coded was Spring 2007 for the History & Philosophy of Science Department at I.U. Since that time I have taken various technical classes, attended many conferences and symposiums, and stay abreast of the current thinking via many websites and books. I gain a lot of inspiration from the works of Edward Tufte, Alan Cooper and Marshall McLuhan.

I wrote the Functional Spec Tutorial back in 2001. It has been widely cited in various design and software development publications. It is currently part of the reading curriculum in related classes at Boston University, Creative Solutions, Parsons: The New School for Design, and others. The tutorial is licensed under Creative Commons and freely available for eductational purposes.

I'm currently working on an update that more broadly covers communicating design within the software and product development process.

I play pedal steel guitar in the sonic-folk band River City. I also sit in with other bands and performers on occasion.
